Marais Salants de Vie
A picturesque setting
Enjoy a relaxing visit to the" Marais Salants de la Vie" salt marshes in Saint Hilaire de Riez and learn about the traditions of salt harvesting.
Re-opened in 1995, the Vallée de la Vie salt marshes once again produce this "white gold".
Throughout the summer you can learn about the traditions associated with salt harvesting.
Anthony Oger, a salt worker at Marais de l'Etoile, will teach you about his "sel de Vie" (salt of life), cooking salt and "fleur de sel".
You will learn about the traditional Vendée "bourrine" houses which are covered in reeds.
You can also observe the fauna and flora during your visit: herons, aigrettes, marsh harriers and ducks are amongst the birds who live here.
